Leanna McKenzie began her dance training at age 3, studying ballet first, then adding jazz, tap, lyrical, modern, pointe, musical theater, period dance, world dance, and partnering. She graduated from Anderson University, with majors in exercise science and psychology, and a minor in dance performance. Notable teachers and choreographers that she has worked with include Robert L Reed, Sharon Wong (Alvin Ailey), The Radio City Rockettes, Ballet Magnificat, The Springfield Ballet, and Brownie and Reggio (St. Louis Tap Festival). Leanna is a former member of Crossroads Dance Indy, and has appeared with Motus Dance, Booth Tarkington Civic Theater, and in numerous local projects in Chicago and Indianapolis. Leanna has taught adaptive dance for Kids Dance Outreach, as well as dance outreach programs in Trinidad. She has taught at several studios over the years, notably serving as assistant director for a service-oriented performance company and assistant director for The Nutcracker in Decatur, Illinois. Leanna has trained in Vaganova, Cecchetti, and RAD styles of ballet, and uses that wide base of training to expose her students to the differences in terminology and style. She is a certified yoga instructor, and focuses on safe technique and injury prevention in her classes. Leanna moved to Lexington with her husband from Chicago in 2020, and is thrilled to be a part of the BASD team.
